Here are a few great cheap eats in Binghamton.
1. Chris's Diner (192 State Street)
You will get your money's worth here (and even more), it is cheaper than eating at home. The food quality is excellent and the prices are very very very reasonable. It is a diner for breakfast and lunch only. It is on State Street, close to Brunelli Gallerie. The decoration is simple, old and cosy.
Many people go to Chris for its delicious and cheap breakfast. The portions are giant and the omelets are great. Chris is always on the grill; he doesn't seem to let anyone else help him either. He says he uses more than 1000 eggs per day on Saturdays and Sundays. Between 8 in the morning and mid day on Sundays, Chris is always busy but I always manage to find a table after a few minutes of waiting.
At Chris's Diner, for two people, we never paid more than $ 15 (including two coffees, a Greek Omelette (or hashed corned beef with eggs) with hash browns and toast, three giant pancakes(or french toasts). Here are a few examples of breakfast prices
Two Eggs w/Home Fries, Toast, and Coffee....$2.85
Two Eggs w/Steak (served with Home Fries and toast)...6.75
French Toast....$3.00
Two Pancakes w/Two Eggs and Two Sausage, 1/2 order Home Fries and Coffee....$5.00
Greek Omelet(served with Home Fries and toast)...4.45
Here are examples of Lunch Prices
Hamburger......$4.95
Greek Salad....$5.45
Gyro Meal(with French Fries and Coleslaw, cottage cheese, mac salad or apple sauce)...$6.00
I also love the waiters at Chris, there is always the same waiters there so I guess they like working at Chris's Diner. My only concern is their coffee, it is not so great, I wish they improved their coffee.
I recommend Chris for lunch too. They have the best Gyro in New York State. If you don't eat lamb, try the Greek Chicken or Chicken Gyro.
2)Rolando's Diner (140 Court Street) My second option for cheap eat is Rolanda's Diner. It is very cheap, and the prices are very close to Chris's prices. The breakfast at Rolanda's Diner is not as good as the breakfast at Chris's diner but for lunch they can easily compete.
Rolanda's Diner is very busy for lunch in the weekdays. I don't know why but there is always so many police officers having lunch there. The service is fast and the waiters are experienced.
The prices at Rolando's Diner are very close to the prices at Chris's but the portions are not as generous. I don't mind this because it is still enough food.
Their specials are generally very good, especially the Greek Chicken.
3) Argo Restaurant (117 Court Street)
My third recommendation is the Argo Restaurant, a restaurant new to our town. It has giant portions and the food quality is fine. You should conider sharing your orders here.
What I like about Argo Restaurant is - it is always open for breakfast, lunch and dinner-everyday including Sunday. It is a big restaurant with many table.
Their menu options are infinitive; they have Souvlaki(4.75), Moussakas(5.95), burgers, wraps and sandwiches. For Dinner they have everything including fish, chicken, beef, pork, lamp, pasta and vegetarian dishes. The prices for dinner range around $10.
The major problem with Argo is their service quality. I was never very satisfied with my waiter at Argo; they seem to have a high turn over of waiters there. The prices are very reasonable, the food quality quite good but the service is not so great. They need more experienced waiters.
