Budget Vacationing in Mexico

When you are planning a trip to Mexico, the first expense you will encounter is a passport, which can usually be purchased at your local post office. Without a valid passport, you will not be able to leave the country. You need to apply for your documents well in advance of your trip, since it will take several weeks to process and you will need plenty of time if you need to correct any mistakes. An adult passport will cost you around $60, not including the photos which you much purchase ahead of time.

When planning for food expenses, do not forget to include bottled water and other beverages to drink with meals. Consuming the local water is not recommended, unless it is in food or drinks where it has been boiled first. Keep in mind that ice is made with water, so chilled drinks are preferable to ones with ices cubes in them. In case you ingest something you shouldn't, you will need to buy appropriate medical supplies, so it is best to buy them in the States and pack them with you.

If you are traveling by plane, you should consider all of the nearby airports, as it may be less expensive to drive a bit more and depart from another airport. If you use the varioustravelwebsites with airfare-and-hotel deals available, these websites will often check the prices of several departure points for you automatically. If you live in the southwest, driving into Mexico will probably prove to be a more affordable travel option.

When saving for travel to Mexico, it is important to consider the best time to go. In order to find the best hotel prices, try not to plan your vacation during the typical vacation seasons or around major holidays - and avoid tourist trap areas such as Cancun, where prices, crowds and crime are certain to be much higher. Remember you will need to plan around all of the Mexican holidays and as well as those celebrated in America. Spring Break and Day of the Dead are bad times to visit Mexico if you are want cheaper prices.

When shopping at stalls in the local markets, keep in mind that bargaining is not only expected, but necessary. Once the shopkeeper tells you a price, make them a counter-offer that is just a bit less than half of their original price. Continue back and forth this way until you can reach an acceptable price.
