The first thing you may want to consider to have a budget vacation is to vacation closer to home. This will save on airfare, rental cars, and fuel if you are driving. There are probably many things that you can do within a few hours of your residence. Not only will you save expenses on traveling to that destination you may be able to get a discount for the attractions in the area for being a resident of the state. Many times the major attractions in the area will give out discount coupons that you can use there to save money, while these are usually given out locally always check into it.
If you are planning to visit a place more than once on your trip such as an amusement park, compare the pricing of the daily rate compared to the season passes. While this may not sound logical, most season passes are the same price of two or three visits to the park, and also may give you free parking and discounts on food as well as other perks. Many of these passes are less expensive before they open for the season. So if you are planning to visit a place for a few days, now may be the time to purchase these passes. Always check at your hotel and see if they offer discount prices for the attraction you want to go to.
Eating at the parks is another big expense for many families. To save money on food at attractions, pack a cooler of lunches and leave it in your car. It is less expensive to walk back to your car and eat then it would be to buy food at the attraction you are at. Taking bottled water with you will save on purchasing drinks and can be refilled during the day. What I took was premixed drink mixes that I had in a small container that we didn't just drink plain water every time but got a treat once in awhile when I mixed it in the free water.
The last tip would be getting discounts on motels and hotels you can check the websites and see if you can get a great deal on it. Many times if you get a hotel a few miles away from the attraction, maybe in the next town they usually are cheaper than right there at the attraction. Also check into getting a hotel that has a refrigerator and a microwave, this way you can make quick frozen dinners when you get back to the room at night instead of eating out.
Taking a vacation can be as inexpensive as you make it. There are many places that you can cut back on things and still have a great time.
