Budget-Friendly Nursery Decorating Tips

High Style and Low Cost Ideas for Designing Your Baby's First Room

Nicole Feliciano
Every new mom dreams of putting together the perfect nursery. Warm, nurturing and exuding love. But with the recession, many moms think this dream is impossible. Good news! Even with the smallest budget, I've got seven tips to make your baby's space special.

As a parenting style expert and editor of Momtrends, I am inundated with gorgeous ideas for creating a luxurious nursery. The trouble is, in this economy few people want to splash out for an elaborate nursery that can cost upwards of $5000. Wait. Before you give up on that dream nest for baby, check out these ideas for creating a beautiful customized space for your baby.

1.) Paint an accent wall. When it came time to update our study into a nursery, I immediately thought about repainting the white room a bold splashy color. But paint (especially VOC free paint) can be pricey. I opted to paint one accent wall (on the wall you notice most) in the room and leave the other walls white. This design trick saved me 75% off the cost to repainting the entire room-big savings.

2.) Decals. Wallpaper is sophisticated and I adore modern prints from the likes of Jonathon Adler, but for many this wall treatment is out of reach. Wall decals, are priced right and still give pattern and life to an otherwise drab room. Decals start as low as $25. A good place to start your hunt is Dali Decals.

3.) Storage. Beautiful baskets and canvas bins can really zap your decorating budget. Instead opt for clear plastic tubs. This is one area where you don't need to splurge. Check warehouse stores for deep discounts.

4.) Repurpose frames. We had quite a few prints that we no longer loved. We saved the expensive glass and frame and simply popped in some new baby-friendly prints and photos.

5.) Update a dresser. If you've found a dresser that is somewhat boring but well priced, an easy way to update it is with zippy drawer pulls. From pirates to mermaids, companies like Olive Kids make inexpensive options to turn a so-so piece into something fantastic.

6.) Something custom. Just like you, I drool over gorgeous print fabrics. And I admit to thinking of commissioning a custom bedding set for the new baby. The wiser option? I bought a packaged bedding set (on sale of course) and then splurged on a few yards of custom fabric for accent pieces (pillows and valances). Check out the offerings at Pixie Dust Décor.

7.) Slipcovers. Now is not the time to buy new upholstered pieces. If you are good with the sewing machine, you can recover that old sofa or loveseat and transform it into a sweet place to cuddle with baby. Slipcovers are also washable-a must considering the baby will be pooping and spitting up A LOT.
