Finding Buenos for the first time can be a bit tricky. It is located a bit inside an alley that can be foreboding the first time one visits there. This initial feeling quickly passes however, as the rich scent of Mexican food enters your anxiously twitching nostrils. Upon entering, one will notice that the restaurant is quite homely. It isn't decorated like a lot of other shabby Mexican restaurants, but the art and décor is just comforting to look at. There are framed pictures of some of the people that work there, as well as a display of Bueno y Sano shirts that one can purchase.
The menu served at Bueno y Sano is typical Mexican food such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, chips and dip, etc. The soft tacos and quesadillas are as you would expect from a mid-class Mexican restaurant. The portions are large and will leave you satisfied. The burrito menu, however, is where the restaurant truly shines.
The burritos at Buenos are served in a soft tortilla that is comfortable to hold, not like the hard toasted kind they have at the Veracruzana restaurant located down the street. They are rolled into round ball like objects, resembling a big white pinto bean. There are 15 fillings you can put into your burrito, and you are welcome to mix and match what to put inside. The fillings include the regulars such as chicken and steak and also more interesting ones such as portabella mushrooms, grilled tomato and garlic, shrimp, and Seitan (a beef substitute for vegetarians that resembles tofu, which is actually quite good). Each burrito is also filled with rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, etc.
The prices at Buenos is fair and as you would expect at college town prices. A plain burrito will go for about $5, and different fillings will raise the price by a certain amount. If all you wanted coming in was a burrito and a soda, you would only spend about $7 or $8 dollars and leave feeling very full and satisfied. Tacos run for about $2 each and quesadillas around $5.
If you are a burrito enthusiast such as I am, and you want something 'Good and Healthy', don't hesitate to visit Bueno y Sano. There is also one in the neighboring town of Northhampton. At this restaurant they serve the same great food, only in a classier sort of restaurant setting. Everyone I have ever brought to either of these restaurants have raved about it, and always come back for more. Don't miss it.
