Buffalo Sabres: 5 Greatest Right Wingers of All Time

Brian Boucher

In this six part series, I will break down the top 5 Buffalo Sabres by position and then offer my picks for the 20 greatest Buffalo Sabres of all time in the sixth and final installment. In this article, I will name the 5 top Buffalo Sabres Right Wingers of all time.

5. Jason Pominville (2004-Present)

Pominville isn't an elite scorer by any means but he has been one of the most consistent scorers in the last decade for the Sabres, averaging 24 goals in his 6 full seasons in Buffalo. Jason is a fan favorite and every time he scores, "The Population of Pominville" increases by one, a phrase affectionately coined by Sabres announcer Rick Jeanerret.

Career statistics with the Sabres: 145 goals / 213 assists

4. Mike Foligno (1982-1991)

Mike wore the "C" for the Sabres for 3 seasons and wore it well. One of the toughest and grittiest players to ever wear the "Blue & Gold", he could also light up the lamp, with 511 points, currently 8th all time on the Buffalo Sabres scoring list. Known for his "Foligno Leap" after each goal he scored, Buffalo fans were delighted with his unorthodox celebration 41 times in 1985-86, a career high for Foligno. Mike has two sons that are currently signed with NHL teams. Nick of the Ottawa Senators and Marcus of the team Mike played for 8 seasons with, the Buffalo Sabres.

Career statistics with the Sabres: 247 goals / 264 assists

3. Alexander Mogilny (1990-1995)

"Alexander the Grrrreat!". Sabres fans remember the call well, as long time radio and television announcer Rick Jeanneret would scream the phrase after every Mogilny goal. Alex wore out Rick's voice in 1992-93 as Mogilny was "...Grrrreat" 76 times, a total currently 5th on the NHL's all time list for goals scored in a season. Mogilny's pure talent as a skater and shooter, gave him the ability to score a career 473 goals in the NHL, only 27 away from the hallowed ground of the 500 club. Alex is currently 11th on the Sabres all time scoring list.

Career statistics with the Sabres: 211 goals / 233 assists

2. Rene Robert (1972-1979)

Acquired in a trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins near the end of the 1971-72 season, Robert completed the mold that formed the greatest line in Sabres history, "The French Connection". For seven seasons Rene would skate with center Gilbert Perreault and left wing Rick Martin, wowing fans night after night in Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium, affectionately known as the "Aud". Since Perreault and Martin were deemed the flashiest of the 3 skaters and most popular among fans, some tend to forget how good an offensive player Robert was. Rene tallied two 40 goal seasons, one of those seasons scoring 100 points in 1974-1975, a year in which the Sabres made the Stanley Cup finals in only there 5th year of existence. Robert is currently 6th on the Sabres all time scoring list, in only 7 full seasons with Buffalo

Career statistics with the Sabres: 222 goals / 330 assists

1. Danny Gare (1975-1982)

Gare is one of the most prolific scores in Sabres history, with 3 seasons of 45 goals or more, two of which he hit the 50 milestone in 1975-76/1979-80. Gare is widely considered the best combination of pure offensive talent and toughness that ever laced it up in Buffalo, as he lit the lamp night after night and was never afraid to drop the gloves. Gare is only 1 of 7 players in Sabres history to average a point per game. A list that includes Perreault, Martin, Robert, LaFontaine, Hawerchuk and Mogilny. Gare is currently 9th all time on the Buffalo Sabres scoring list.
