I have seen buffalo at the zoo since I was a child. I never thought of them as menacing. When we visited Yellowstone National Park a few years ago, one of my favorite sights were the buffalo roaming.
I had no idea on the morning we started through Yellowstone National Park of it's enormity. When my husband mentioned he would like to drive through, that's exactly what I thought. Driving through... and through, and through.
I was shocked to see the number of people, with camera in hand, walking as close as they could get to the buffalo. In spite of the numerous signs warning of their danger.
We spent ten hours driving through. I wanted another ten, or twenty hours. Many times as I gazed down over the ridge at the buffalo I was reminded of the movie, one of my favorites, Dances With Wolves. I love the scenes where the herds of buffalo are running along the snow covered grass.
My husband insisted on driving so I could "sight see and photograph" the view. Most of the time I pointed and shouted, "look over there."
In addition to the herds of buffalo we also saw wolves at the edge of the trees.
At the edge of one cliff were gathered photographers trying to capture the water falls and the rapids.
The next time we go to Yellowstone I plan to take hundreds more pictures. I spent more time looking than focusing my camera.
