Company Calls it the Lego Version of Cell Phones

Bug Labs is looking to release a new modular cell phone at the beginning of 2008. Several of the cell phones that have hit the market in the last year have been slight modifications of current models. It seems like cell phones are becoming more complicated and fancier by the day. There are a lot of cell phone users out there who want something simple. The thing is, they might just want something simple some of the time. Other days, they may want a cell hone that comes fully loaded with all of the latest gear. Bug Labs will release the new phone with the sole purpose of allowing you plug and play abilities.

Many people are calling Bug Labs' new modular cell phone rather revolutionary. The plug and play phone will allow you to modify your phone whenever you want to. You will be able to slide or take apart the necessary components to create your cell phone for the day. For example, let us say that you want to have Google Maps and GPS with your for the day. All you would have to do is look at all of your cell phone parts. You would then put the required parts together and modify the cell phone programming through Linux. The Linux software we allow you to continuously change the operations that you want your phone to do. Thus, you end up receiving a truly unique cell phone experience.

The same thing can be said if you do not want a camera to be with your phone. All you would have to do is remove the key components and create yourself a basic cell phone. Basically, Bug Labs wanted to make it so that you can have whatever cell phone design that you want. The cell phone can basically be described as a Linux based mobile computer device. Your mobile computer device comes with several snap on modules that allow you to "create" your own cell phone. Currently, the company is only planning to release the phone, with 4 modules included. The modules will include GPS, digital camera, color LCDtouch screen and even an accelerometer (motion sensor). This leaves room for the company to release several more versions and different modules as well.

My main question about the device has to do with the Linux software. The company does not mention if they will offer a solid how to guide in using that type of software. I understand that there are a lot of people out there who do not know how to use Linux. This makes me wonder if the company is just aiming towards gaining sales through those who are technologically computer savvy. This would be a poor choice because there are many people out there who may enjoy the plug and play capabilities.

Consumers are getting tired with all of the additional components and a lot of them are looking for something easier. It will be interesting to see what direction that Bug Labs is going to take the product when it comes to selling it to certain segments. Only time will tell what happens and if the cell phone modular will be popular.
