Build a Better Relationship with Your Boss by Talking Less

Rosa Hayes
Your boss is your boss for a reason and interrupting your boss or not paying attention to what that person says, is a good sign that your relationship is headed down a rocky road. Maybe you had an idea that you thought was better and wanted your boss to understand but there may also be reasons behind why your boss feels that it isn't a wise choice.

Believe it or not, it is true. If you want to build a better relationship with your boss, you must learn to talk less. Talking less can give you a lot of power and you may not even realize it.

Talking less and listening often

It doesn't matter what people might say, they love it when someone or anyone will listen to them. Sometimes, we just need an ear to help us have a happier day. If your boss seems to be in a bad mood, ask them what is wrong and then just sit back and listen. They will enjoy having someone to talk too even if they are just complaining and will probably choose you more often to help them with other things that could get your promoted quicker.

Don't just shut up, try to understand them

It isn't just about listening and not talking, it's about understanding them as a human and helping them. When your boss is talking, try to listen in on key points that you can help them with. If they are complaining about a particular job, tune in on what has happened and try to figure out a solution to the problem.

People love it when you understand them, it makes them feel like you really want to know what they are going through and this can be a good thing for building your relationship.

Listen and then be heard

After listening for a while and applying these tips, you can offer some suggestions but don't make up stuff unless you are sure that it will make a difference. Always pause after each suggestion and see if your boss will have anything else that they would like to say. People are always looking for feedback after they have been heard and your feedback is very important to them right now.

These tips have helped me and many others to build a better relationship with bosses and when you have a better relationship, great things can happen. Talking less and listening to them is an easy way to get on their good side and hit higher in their favorites field.

Great advice. I've found that people who complain often just get ignored much of the time. Save complaints for the really important matters, and you'll be more likely to have your complaint dealt with.
