Going to college is probably one of the most exciting events in your life. You are probably thrilled that you will be able to aspire to your dreams by going to college. College also means the chance to start building up a career for you. However, by using student credit cards, you can also build a positive credit history to yourself while in college.

As you know in countries like United States, Canada and UK; credit history is more important in someone's life than anything else. If you have a good credit history and thus a good credit rating; you will be able to buy cars, houses, and just about anything that you want, by getting the appropriate loan with a good interest rate. Nowadays with bad credit history; you may even have difficulty securing a job with some employers. So, you can see that having a good credit history will be an essential part of building your future. You can start this process early by getting a student credit card.

Many banks out there are usually eager to give credit cards to students starting out in college. In fact, the majority of these banks will give you %0 interest introductory rates for 6 to 12 months. This means that you will be able to shop, draw cash and do anything that you want without paying any interest. Also in order to make the student credit cards more advantageous; most banks offer incentives such as cash back for your purchases or giving you rewards points for each expenditure that you make. For example, you may be given 120 reward points for shopping of $60 in your college book store etc. These points can be accumulated and you will be able to pick out various rewards like TV's, Play stations, Concert Tickets with your reward points.

Thus as you continue to use your student credit card, you will be taking advantage of the many incentives offered to you by the banks. However, the real incentive will be the fact that you will be gaining a positive credit history in the process. The Credit Assessment Agencies will take note of the fact that you will be gaining an experience with credit card expenditure and they will also take note of the facts like: do you make your payments on time, do you spend the majority of your credit card etc. If you use your student credit card wisely; you will be able to have a positive history on your credit file. Thus, when you graduate from college; you can start with a good credit history and a relatively high credit rating.

However, the worst mistake that you can do will be to substitute your student credit card in place of your student loan. Even with all those incentives, you should not just see your credit card as a way to get some quick cash or a way to put off your other debts that you may have. This will only lead you to a negative credit history and a destruction of your financial self. You must use the student credit card not as a life saver; but rather as a credit building tool. You should spend as much as your income allows and not a cent more. This way you can have a proper start on your financial life, when you graduate from college.

Summary:

Student Credit Cards can be instrumental in building a good credit history while you are still in college. However, they should be used wisely and with restraint.
