Build Your Jonah Hex Library

J. Gordon
The 2010 Jonah Hex feature film stars Josh Brolin as Jonah Hex and Megan Fox as Leila. The movie is based on a character published by DC Comics which is owned by Warner Bros.

Jonah Hex first appeared in the comic books in 1972. His story was part of a Western anthology that featured other Frontier heroes. Some of these first stories, as well as the modern tales of Jonah Hex, are published in trade paperbacks.

Comic book trade paperbacks are issues collected into one volume. DC Comics publishes these volumes every month, collecting comic books published in the last year or two, or even comics published in the early twentieth century.

These volumes can be purchased at your local bookstore, such as Barnes and Noble or Borders, or they can be bought online through Amazon.com. Comic Book stores also carry trade paperbacks, and usually offer a very diverse selection.

Jonah Hex's publication has been monthly since 2006. Before that, his appearances were more sporadic. Western had fallen out of favor in the comic book industry through the 80s and 90s, but picked up again in the 2000s with comic books such as DC's Jonah Hex, DC/Vertigo's Loveless, and Dynamite Entertainment's new adaptation of The Lone Ranger. Since 2006, Jonah Hex has published over 50 issues, and most of these are collected in trade paperback

Classic Jonah Hex Stories:

As stated, Jonah Hex has been around since 1972. Most of those stories are only available in single comic book issues. Many of these can be acquired at your local comic book store. If unavailable there, check online at sites like eBay or Amazon.com. There are also comic book store websites such as mycomicbookshop.com that specialize in back issues. That said, there is one collection of Jonah Hex adventures from that era:

Showcase Presents: Jonah Hex Vol. 1

These are stories created by classic comic book creators of the 70s. Some of the famous writers and artists of these stories include Robert Kanigher, Gray Morrow, Gil Kane, Jim Aparo, Len Wein, Nick Cardy, Cary Bates and Neal Adams.

This collection also includes the first appearance of Jonah Hex, All-Star Western #10.

All of the books listed above would be a fabulous start to a growing library for this gritty Western anti-hero.
