Build an Outdoor Flower Pot Wall Shelf for Garden Decoration

Melanie L. Marten
Decorating your outside wall with flower pots is an idea that is popular around the world. Half pots and baskets overflowing with plants are seen a lot in European cities. However, with these on-the-wall planters comes the mess of creeping plants and dripping water. Neater than hanging plant baskets and vines, this flower pot shelf allows for increased garden decor while maintaining the maximum health of the plants.

Materials Needed for Flower Pot Shelf

To make this unique flower pot shelf, you will need two wooden boards, three strong shelf brackets, four terra cotta, ceramic, or plastic flower pots with wide lips at the top, and weather-resistant paint.

To complete the project, potting soil, small pieces of screen, and plants are also needed. A way to attach the shelf to the outside wall will depend on that type of wall you have.

Building the Flower Pot Wall Shelf

Begin with a piece of strong board a bit longer than four flower pots and wider than one. Cut and sand it to prepare the wood. Then, using first a hole drill and then a jig saw, cut out holes in the board for the flower pots.

To do this, begin by measuring the diameter of the flower pot before the wide lip at the top. This lip will hold the pot in the wall shelf. Measure this length out four times on the surface of the board, being sure to leave at least three inches of board between each one. Draw the circles and then cut them out. Sand all edges.

After the holes are cut, paint or stain the board and the shelf brackets that will hold it up. Use a weatherproof paint or waterproofing stain or finish.

Hanging the Flower Pot Wall Shelf

Depending on what type of siding you have on your house, you will hang the wall shelf in different ways. Some possible methods include masonry screws, regular screws, or specialty hooks.

Planting the Flower Pot Wall Shelf

Begin by putting a small piece of screen in the bottom of each pot to cover the hole. This will prevent unsightly drips of dirty water and will reduce the chance of insect infestation.

Fill the pots with your mixture of potting soil and then simply plant the plants in them as recommended for the particular type of plant.

After hanging the shelf, slip one flower pot into each hole in the shelf. Then stand back and admire your flower pot wall shelf and the beauty it brings to your home and garden.
