The word 'beautiful' is used so often that the meaning has become dull or commonplace, when in fact the word's original implication indicates that the person or object described as 'beautiful' stands out among others.
To make sure your meaning is clear, try using some of these alternate words. Some are more specific in terms of beauty and also encompass both inner and outer beauty.
Enchanting
Definition: Possessing a magical or ethereal beauty. Having the ability to charm or enchant the viewer.
Example: Mairi looked enchanting in her yellow dress; it picked up the highlights of the moonlight.
Connotation: This word implies mystery, magic, and intrigue. A person described as enchanting may be socially glib or could have a physical beauty implicative of ageless wisdom.
Fair
Definition: Light-skinned; a type of complexion.
Example: The knight rescued a maiden with fair skin.
Connotation: This is the proper way to describe a light-skinned person. Referring to someone as 'pale' implies that he or she is ill or potentially lacks beauty.
Captivating
Definition: Possessing the ability to hold the attention of others.
Example: Aside from being talented, the actor has a captivating personality.
Connotation: This word typically applies to inner and/or outer beauty. Implied is a degree of respect for the subject.
Grace
Definition: An elegant gesture, action, or mannerism.
Example: The graceful dancer glides across the floor as though she is skating.
Connotation: This word can describe many aspects of a person, from movement to general style to manner of personality. It also implies innocence.
Elegance
Definition: The presence of refinement, good taste, and discretion.
Example: The gown she wore to the ball was elegant-it was flattering and composed of neutral tones, and a modest neckline.
Connotation: Use of this word implies feelings of admiration toward the subject. It is often associated with the upper class.
Allure
Definition: Possessing a great deal of charm or fascination.
Example: The new religion held a great deal of allure for John.
Connotation: This word implies a somewhat wholesome attraction.
Winsome
Definition: Pleasantly charming and possessing the ability to gain without ulterior motive.
Example: The young child offered a winsome smile which revealed that he was being honest.
Connotation: This is a somewhat old-fashioned word, but if used properly, it is sure to attract the right kind of attention.
Most of these words are oft written, but not spoken. You probably recognize most of them or know what they mean already, but incorporating them into your verbal speech will assist you in being more descriptive in a social environment.
