Hire a Contractor or Do it Yourself?
Once you have decided that you are going to be building a bar at home, the first question to ask yourself is whether you should hire a contractor or try to do the work yourself. It all really depends on how handy you are and how important it is that you save some money.
Building a bar at home involves many steps. You will need to buy all of the necessary materials and rent equipment and power tools to make the job easier. The most important investment you will make into this bar building project will be your time-you can easily end up spending days or even weeks to finish the project if you are not a carpenter by trade.
On the other hand, if you decide to hire a professional to do the job, it may cost you more, but a good contractor can probably finish the work in a day or two. All that you need to do is give the contractor a general idea of the style, colors, materials, and allow them to get to work. One of the most important decision is the location of the bar.
Where Should the Bar Be Built
The most common locations that people choose when building a bar at home are the basement, den, and living room. A finished basement is ideal because in a way it is set apart from the rest of the house. So going to relax at the home bar in the basement is almost like going to a bar away from home.
People also like to build their home bars in the living room or den because that is where the family usually goes to lay back and enjoy themselves.
Concerns When Building a Bar at Home
The main concern people have when thinking about building a bar at home is the presence of alcohol. It is sometimes dangerous to have a large stock of alcohol in your house for several reasons.
For one, when you have a constant supply of alcoholic drinks in your house, readily available, you may have an increased compulsion to drink. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism suggests that if you have even a slight problem with alcohol, you should not keep a large amount of alcohol at home. This is because you want to avoid the temptation that comes with having it right at your finger tips at all times.
The other issue you should explore when you're thinking about building a bar at home is your kids. If you have young children or teenagers in the home, it may not be a great idea to have a fully stocked bar in your basement or living room. When you are away and the kids are home, they may be tempted to drink the alcohol. However, many people resolve this situation by locking their liquor up in cabinets behind or underneath the bar.
