The first thing when selecting a location for you flower bed that you should consider is soil. You want to pick one that is not to rocky and not to acidic. Go have the area you are looking at tested and that can provide you with the needed information. The next thing that you should take care of when building a flowerbed is the water situation. Ask yourself is there a way to get water to the bed location, will this location allow for good water drainage, and does this area allow receive good rain accumulation when it rains? If you answered yes to all of those questions then it is a good location. Finally, consider the amount of sun the area gets. You want to pick an area that gets enough morning and afternoon sun but protects the bed from the scorching mid day sun.
After you have determined where your flowerbed should be, place tiles around the parameter of your location. Then mix a combination of the soil you have and the additives you may need, such as potting soil, and place them into the bed area. If you soil is to acidic you may want to add lime to the mixture to neutralize it some. Your local nursery can help you decide what to add to you bed using the analysis that you received when deciding where to plant. You definitely want to add fertilizer to provide the nutrient needed to your future plants. Top off the your soil with a good mulch and you are ready to plant.

Don't be afraid to improve you home with a well-placed and planned flowerbed. It is a home improvement project that keeps giving every year if taken care of. You may even find a variety of flowers that you can rotate with the seasons to add to the appeal of you flower bed. Just remember to pick a good location and water accordingly and you can't go wrong.
