Building and Installation Tips for Bathroom Cabinets

Pauline Abreu
Building a bathroom cabinet doesn't have to be a difficult task. Firstly, you will need a set of plans before you begin to build. Plans can be downloaded from the Internet, purchased at a hardware store, or if you are handy with a paper and pencil, you can even draw up the plans yourself.

- Instructions for Building a Bathroom Cabinet -

1. Take measurements of the area where you are going to be placing the cabinet.

2. Write down the exact height, width, and length of the cabinet. You have to be very accurate when dealing with the measurements as even a small error can make all the difference.

3. If you are drawing the plans yourself, add all of these measurements to the plans.

4. Decide on the type of wood you would like to use. This material will be in a moist room, so you should choose the wood accordingly, also add wood stain, sealer, or paint to protect the material.

5. Choose what type of hardware you need, for knobs, hinges, and handles. You will also need screws, nails, and waterproof glue.

6. If you need help in choosing materials for your cabinet your local hardware assistant will have all the information you require. Once all your materials are in place, you are ready to build.

7. Cut all of the cabinet pieces to the correct size.

8. Lay out all of the pieces of the frame and glue together. Make sure the frame is square before the glue dries.

9. Attach the backboards and sideboards, then paint or stain your cabinet.

10. Put the doors on using the hinges, fix the handles onto the cabinet, then you are ready to install.

- Instructions for Installing a bathroom Cabinet -

1. First you will have to locate the wall studs using a stud finder. Mark the location of the studs, as this is where your cabinet is going to be fixed.

2. Measure and cut out the holes for any water pipes you intend to put through the cabinet.

3. Make sure everything is level using a leveler, and check your measurements to be sure they are accurate.

4. Mark the cabinet where you are going to attach each nail or screw. You will have to measure the wall to where the studs are, then mark the back of the cabinet accordingly.

5. Drill small holes where your screws or nail are going to be. Attach the cabinet to the wall. Make sure it is very secure and firmly in place. That's it, you're all done!

Building and installing your own bathroom cabinet can be a lot of fun. You will find that you have a sense of accomplishment, you'll have something to be proud of. It may even work out cheaper to make and install the cabinet yourself, as opposed to buying the cabinet, and having someone install it for you. You will find, making and installing your bathroom cabinet is easier than you may think.
