Building an Open Backyard Patio

Eric Brennan

To improve the look of your back yard, create a place to enjoy the weather and nature by building an open patio. Building a patio with flag stones, patio slabs or brick pavers requires simple tools and is an environmentally safe way to create a foundation without the use of cement.

Planning the Area

Choose the area you desire to construct the patio and measure the area in square feet; this will help in choosing the amount of blocks needed to cover the area based on the size of the blocks or slabs. If the area is oddly shaped, then small pavers can be another alternative. Once the size and shape has been determined begin clearing away the spot.

Clearing and Leveling the Soil

If there are weeds in the area, these will need to be dug out to remove the root system completely. Once the soil is clear of weeds and large debris it will need to be leveled. To level the soil you can use a garden rake which in effect will help with the removal of any additional debris in the soil and move the dirt around to fill in low spots or level off higher spots. It is best to have two people when leveling the soil. Take a 2x4 and set it down on the prepared area. The wood will sit flat if the soil is level and likewise if it is uneven you will be able to see where extra soil is needed. Use the edge of the wood to scrape off and move the soil around until the ground is smooth and flat. Using a wooden level is the last step to ensure your area is completely leveled off.

Keeping out the Weeds

To create a low maintenance patio, the use of weed cloth in between the soil and stones will make it easier to keep weeds from growing in between the stones and eliminate the use of harmful chemicals to eradicate weeds. Place some large rocks or gardening stakes at the corners of the cloth so that it will not be moved.

Choosing and Installing the Stones

With a wide variety of stones and pricing the choices are almost endless. Choosing a type of stone that fits your look and budget will not be a challenge. Some good choices are patio slabs, flag stones or pavers. Remember, the larger the stones, the less you will need. For a unique look try pavers, they come in assorted colors and you will be able to create patterns and have more play in the shaping of your patio. Once you have chosen the type of stones you will be using, they will be ready to layout. Start laying your stones down, make sure they fit together tightly, if you notice any rocking, pull the weed cloth up and level the soil underneath. Once completed, adding patio d©cor will give it the finishing touch and you're ready to enjoy all your hard work.
