You will need the following items to build rock climbing anchors:
- A pair of climbing shoes
- A climbing harness
- A high quality climbing rope and a bag to keep it in
- Quick draws
- A belay device
- Some locking carabineers
- Grigri
- Chalk and a bag to put it in
- A pair of gloves
- A daisy chain
- The cliff that you are about to climb
- The best type of rock climbing for this cliff
- Where you will fashion your anchor
- Obstacles or dangers that are in your way
- Your expertise level
Consider the other people who are rock climbing with you. Bear in mind what their experience level is whenever you are deciding upon the placement of your rock climbing anchors. Don't establish an anchor that will only work for your talent.
Construct an anchor with your primary and secondary anchors. Equalize them above the point where you attach your rope. This will evenly distribute your weight over the anchor system. Make sure that you are well anchored to a solid, secure rock and that your anchors are equalized so that the weight isn't placed on just one of them.
Always go rock climbing with someone who is experienced. Regardless of how much you think you know, if you don't have practical experience, your rock climbing education isn't going to help you any. It is a good idea to go rock climbing with an instructor in the beginning so that he will be able to check your anchor once you have built your system. He will also be able to tell you how to improve upon it and inform you of any mistakes that you may have made.
Before you ever go rock climbing by yourself or with a skilled partner, you need to make sure that you have a solid knowledge of how all of your rock climbing equipment works. A rock climbing club should be able to have a professional tell you exactly how everything should feel and work. He will teach you how to step into your harness, clip your belay device and work with the carabineers, as well as the rest of your equipment.
Check all your equipment before you ever go rock climbing. Never use faulty devices. Replace them before you go climbing.
