Building a Support System- One of the True Keys to Success

Christopher Blydenburgh
No matter your profession, or even whether your are old enough to have a profession, there is a simple method that has been used for centuries to help you achieve whatever it is you desire. You don't really hear a lot about this, but it almost never fails, and it is the simplest thing in the world to do. Build a support system.

Everybody knows people, and that's all a support system is, essentially, is a group of people. This particular group of people acts as motivator, support, and encouragement. Think about your friends. They are all different. Likely, you find different strengths in each one. Some friends give you comfort when you are sad, others encourage you when you want to give up, and others just make you laugh when you don't really see a reason to do so.

Believe it or not, these social groups can be the key to success. Seek out like minded people. If you want to become a doctor, try to meet other doctors or med students. Use focus groups or social networking sites, and find people with the same goals as you. For goals like quitting smoking, find support groups. The reason these groups exist is that they work. If you are determined to do or learn something, and you surround yourself with people who will learn with you and encourage you, you are infinitely more likely to achieve your goal. You will find, that with the right support and the proper amount of drive, determination, and effort, your potential is truly limitless.

If you can't find people who specialize or are looking to do what you are, put an ad in the paper, post a bulletin on a social networking site or want ad site such as craigslist. There are forums out there for everything and everyone these days. Once you find like minded people, set up a regular time to get together, either in person or on the internet, and share ideas, progress, and encouragement. You can do this long-term, really keeping yourselves going farther and farther all the time, if your goal is broad, like climbing farther up the corporate ladder, or short term, until a goal like not smoking or forming an exercise regimen is completed. Brainstorm ways to help yourselves progress faster or get closer to your goal. With a good support team, you can achieve almost anything, and actually make friends and enjoy yourself while doing it.
