Some of the occurrences that are reported in the news these days are nothing new. These things have been happening throughout the lifespan of everyone present and past. What's surprising is that with the near instantaneous media coverage of our time, nothing seems to pull at the conscious of potential perpetrators. Some individuals are still openly hateful and harmful to others with no regard for their victims or the consequences. People of all ages are being murdered, maimed, battered, subjects of social media attack, verbal assault and extortion at the hands and mouths of detestable individuals and mobs with multiple levels of superiority and esteem issues themselves.
No matter who you are, what you have or where you come from, everyone has a soft spot. For some, the social scars are deep and unforgettable, and unfortunately in some cases unforgivable. If pillows could talk, they would have millions of stories to tell about the hurt and cries of individuals that are victimized by bullies.
As human beings, we tend to only care about things when there is mass media coverage of an issue of major concern. Much like the holiday season when most people are jolly, giving and thoughtful, but the rest of year they relapse to their selfish and unfriendly ways. It's time to train or re-train ourselves about caring about everyone around us.
Consider this. The very person that you bully or haze could possibly be someone that can have a positive meaning in your life if you take the time to get to know them, and most importantly, allow them to know you. So before you lecture your adolescents on bullying, check yourself. If you don't think you need to lecture your adolescent - check yourself. If you don't think you need to check yourself then check me when I don't practice what I preach.
