Bumbo Baby Sitter Product Recall

Anjanette Barr
Last week while shopping at Walmart I stopped in the baby section to look at sales. One of the aisle end-caps was displaying an array of colored "Bumbo Baby Sitter" boxes adorned with incredibly cute babies and eye-catching font. The display had indeed caught the eyes of a fellow shopper who was standing directly in front of the seats with her mouth nearly open. "Aren't these neat?" she asked.

Very neat. But if you visit Walmart's website this evening and click on the product link for the Bumbo Baby Sitter, you'll get a message that says "Product Not Found!" That's because the South African company, Bumbo International has recalled 1 million of these neat seats after 28 reports of babies being injured after falling out of them.

The light-weight, portable seat is advertised to be designed to enable a baby to sit upright by themselves without the aid of any straps or harnesses. A play tray accessory for the seat is sold separately. This product has won numerous awards, and the Bumbo website features testimonials from parents lauding that this seat helps with gastro esophageal reflux, joubert syndrome and other problems that can make it difficult or painful for babies to sit upright.

Regarding the recall, Bumbo International says that it is "voluntarily making available free downloads of updated instructional leaflets and safety warning labels" in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and has temporarily stopped sales of the product until the packaging can be updated to reflect the new warnings. The warning displayed prominently on the "Bumbo Seat Safety" section of their website reads:

"WARNING - Prevent Falls;
Never use on any elevated surface.
Never use on a raised surface.
Never use as a car seat or bath seat.
Designed for floor level use only.
Never leave your baby unattended
as the seat is not designed to be
totally restrictive and may not
prevent release of your baby in the
event of vigorous movement. "

A forum has been added to their website as an outlet for parents wanting to discuss their questions and concerns regarding safety, and they have also set up a toll-free number for parents wanting more information at 877-WE-BUMBO (877-932-8626).

The company stresses that the seat is safe when used properly and no changes to the product itself have been announced. They expect to resume sales in the next few days.

I have so many friends who use these things, but I've never been comfortable with them. Babies who move a lot can pop out of them waaay too easily! A friend's baby girl popped right out and (thankfully!) into her lap once. - She hadn't even left her unattended.

Nicely written piece with excellent information for parents that own the Bumbo seat. Thanks for sharing and getting the word out about the recall/updated packaging!

Use common sense people! You never leave your baby alone. Leave it to a few irresponsible parents to blame their own mistakes on a great product. If they read the enclosed instructional leaflet and basic parenting skills they could have prevented these accidents from happening. Screw Wal-Mart! The Bumbo has been a Godsend to us as parents, and a great spot for our baby to hang out nearby as we go about everyday life.

i have used the bumbo seat and i love it! i cant understand why any parent leaves a baby alone in anykind of seat. think about it.. some baby are more active then others and can get out of anything. some baby can get out of cribs. so it is a shame babies get hurt in a chair that is for the floor not the counter.
