Bun-B II Trill Early Album Review: Can the UGK Member Overcome the Death of Pimp-C?

The Reviewer
Bun-B is one of the pioneers of hip hop in Houston, Texas. Now after the death of his close friend and UGK member Pimp-C, Bun-B is back on the scene with the follow up to his hit album Trill. On II Trill, Bun-B is back solo with Houston on his back. Will II Trill live up to Bun-B's extraordinary legacy?

The first single off of II Trill is J.R. Rotem produced That's Gangsta featuring Sean Kingston. The song is a solid first single. Sean Kingston delivers a solid chorus and Bun-B delivers strong verses.

You're Everything teams Bun-B with Rick Ross, David Banner and 8-Ball & MJG. The song samples Jodeci's You're Everything. The track is the typical posse cut. The beat sounds almost menacing in nature with its dark synths. The rappers involved deliver solid verses.

Lil Wayne teams up with Bun-B on Damn I'm Cold. The song features a sample and a solid chorus. Lil Wayne and Bun-B both shine on the track and it is one of the more memorable tracks on the album with the syncopated hi hat hits.

On Swang On Em Lupe Fiasco joins Bun-B. The song features a beat led by a heavy synth horn section. The song is not one of the strongest tracks on the album yet it is fairly solid. You would never expect to hear Lupe on a beat like this.

Pop It 4 Pimp features Webbie and captures the magic of their previous it Gimme Dat. The song is what you would expect from a collaboration between these two artists. The song even samples Juvenile's Back That Thang Up. The song is an interesting variation of a tribute song.

Keep It 100 is definitely a solid street track. The song features a very strong beat and very strong verses from Bun-B.

I Luv That features a very different sounding beat. The track sounds like a mix between Houston and Los Angeles music. The hybrid track is very sonically interesting.

Get Cha Issue is definitely one of the most thought provoking tracks on the album. The song talks about politics and issues that really matter in the world today.

II Trill is the quality album that you expect from Bun-B. Throughout the effort, he remains true to himself and showcases his highly skilled lyrical ability. Overall II Trill gets 8 out of 10. If you are a fan of Bun-B make sure you pick up II Trill when it is available in stores on May 20th.
