If you order onion rings at Burger King, you can choose from several different dipping sauces to make your dining experience more enjoyable. One of the most popular choices is Burger King Zesty Sauce for onion rings. This sauce certainly adds more flavor and pizazz to onion rings, but is it bad for you?

Burger King Zesty Onion Ring Sauce: What's In It?

Burger King Zesty sauce is a mixture of soybean oil, horseradish, vinegar, salt, corn syrup, egg yolk, tomato paste, salt, sugar, propylene glycol alginate, xanthan gum, lemon juice concentrate, beet powder, extractive of annatto, calcium disodium EDTA. As you can see, there are quite a few preservatives and "synthetic" ingredients in this rather innocent-looking sauce for onion rings.

The Nutritional Lowdown

Burger King packed a significant number of calories into this spicy sauce for onion rings. In fact, a single one ounce container, which you can easily devour eating a single order of onion rings has 150 calories and a whopping 15 grams of fat. Combine that with the calories and fat in the onion rings and you can see why this isn't a smart choice. Plus, it's relatively high in sodium at 201 grams - and has no nutritional value whatsoever.

Is there a healthier option to replace the Burger King Zesty sauce for onion rings? If you're concerned about calories, you're better off choosing the barbeque dipping sauce at 40 calories per ounce serving, but don't mistake it for health food. It still has10 grams of sugar - and is high in salt and has little nutritional value.

All in all, the dipping sauces at Burger King a lot to be desired from a nutritional, calorie and sodium standpoint, but the onion rings you dip into them aren't much better. A better option if you're on a splurge and have a craving for onion rings is to dip them in mustard instead. It's still high in salt but low in calories, fat and sugar.

If you're "addicted" to Burger King Zesty Onion Ring sauce, you can make a healthier version at home using low-fat mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, mustard, light ranch dressing and cayenne pepper. There are recipes to show you how to this online. Do it yourself and save a few calories - and maybe your health.
