Burlesque: A Review

Annie Jean Brewer
Ali becomes fed up with the small town she lives in and grabs a bus for the big city of Los Angeles. While beating the pavement trying to follow her dreams of becoming a singer she stumbles upon "the best view on Sunset Strip"--without any windows.

The music and dancing she finds within the Burlesque Lounge call to her and when Tess refuses to hire her she grabs a tray and starts waiting tables on her own. Her determination pays off and she is allowed to stay as a waitress.

Eventually she is allowed to join the performers onstage, and this is where the drama really begins.

This reviewer watched the movie out of curiosity without any idea what it would be like and was delighted at the story line. Two main themes carried this movie: one of Ali and her fight to achieve her dreams and that of Tess who has her dream and is having to battle to keep it.

This movie was very engaging; this reviewer openly laughed at some of the routines performed and found herself cheering the main characters on. While this is not a movie for young children to watch, there was more suggestion than actual sexuality in the scenes--a relief in the light of the blatant nudity so common in modern film.

Both Cher and Christina Aguilera performed well in this movie--it is amazing that Cher is in her mid-60s and can so admirably pull off this role. The vocals in the film were wonderful, and this reviewer may end up looking for the soundtrack because the music was really nice.

While the beginning of the movie was slow and boring, those who have the patience to stick with it until the action starts will not regret the ticket price. It is definitely a movie to see more than once for those who enjoy the musical genre.
