"Burlesque" Showcases Cher and Christina Aguilera Perfeclty

A DVD Movie Review

Charlotte Kuchinsky
For reasons I couldn't explain even to myself, I have wanted to see the film "Burlesque" almost from its inception. Maybe that stems from my love of Cher's voice. Maybe it is because I non-ashamedly admit that I love movie musicals. Whatever the reason, I have been chomping at the bit to see that film.

I didn't get a chance to see "Burlesque" at the theater when it first came out. However, I was one of the first in line to check out the DVD as soon as it came available. I'm happy I made that decision.

Obviously, "Burlesque" isn't going to be a film that everyone will enjoy. First of all, you have to like the bald sense of humor of Cher. Secondly, you have to like burlesque in its cheeky form. Finally, you need to like musicals because this film is all about the music.

The one thing I wasn't sure about going in was lead Christina Aguilera. I didn't have anything against the singer, mind you. I just wasn't that familiar with her voice; only her sometimes questionable antics off screen. Having said that; however, I must admit that I hate the fact I have been missing out on that voice for all of these years. That girl can sing!

Not only that, Aguilera can also act. Who knew? From a corn fed country girl not that different from myself to a risque showgirl on the burlesque stage, Aguilera as Ali manages to capture the audience's attention. More than that, she holds it firm like an iron fist in a velvet glove.

She had me at her first note and left me wanting more, more, more! She is just that good.

Of course, it was delightful to watch Cher weave her own kind of mysterious magic on stage as well. Although she only had two songs in the whole movie, she made both of those songs count. None so much, though, as the one she sings all alone on a dark stage.

I'd forgotten that the 60's phenom can also act. She had fun with the role of Tess, which included equal parts of of June Cleaver. It was a weird combination that worked in a hypnotic way.

Another revelation for me was Kristen Bell as Nikki. The usual girl next door look was gone along with her trademark blond locks. Instead, a dazzling brunette appeared with a body that didn't quit and a voice that was 10 times the size of the tiny girl behind it.

I admit that I didn't recognize "Dancing with the Stars" Julianne Hough, as Georgia. The red hair threw me for a loop, I guess. Although I did keep getting the sense that I should have known who the actress was. Go figure!

Eric Dane did well as one of the two leading men. He played, protagonist, Marcus, who unbeknownst to Tess wanted her club not because he loved the entertainment but because he desired the property itself.

Cam Gigandet played the other lead as the long suffering artist with a heart of gold. He was good, but he didn't really leave a lasting impression.

I have to admit; however, that my favorite character other than the two leads was that of Sean, played by the incomparable Stanley Tucci. Is it just me or does this actor just get better, and sexier, with age? I love him!

"Burlesque," written and directed by Steve Antin, provides a unique spin on an age-old story. In this instance it is naive girl who goes to California in search of fame and fortune. Only in this instance, she finds what she is really looking for - - family - - in the most unlikely place of all; a burlesque club.

Antin is smart as a director. He lets his actors go and allows them freedom to develop their characters within his carefully set perimeters. The end result it striking and nearly spot-on perfection.

I loved this movie. I loved all the songs. I loved all the dancing. I loved the characters. I loved the acting. I loved every last minute of it and I can't wait to watch it again, this time with my husband.

It is hard to pinpoint what I love most about the film. Still, if I must, I'd have to say it is Aguilera herself. What a talent and one that was tailored made for this kind of film. Let's hope Hollywood produces more to take advantage of it. To do less would be a real shame.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars. Need I say more?

Be aware, "Burlesque" is a bawdy film. It is not suitable for children and people who are easily offended by sexual situations may also wish to steer clear.
