Burn Notice is Back

The second half of Burn Notice's second season has started and already speculation has ensued about what will happen in the popular TV spy series' third season. In the meantime, Michael Weston, the fired super spy, is having his usual problems.

Last Fall on Burn Notice we saw Michael, played by Jeffery Donovan, getting blown up by a booby trapped front door to his apartment, flying over the railing and headed toward the cold, hard pavement. Now, in January, we see him hit the pavement and being rescued by his somewhat seedy, flabby, but still highly skilled buddy and ex Navy SEAL Sam Axe, played with great fun by Bruce Campbell.

At first Michael assumes that he was just almost canceled by the mysterious, beautiful, and thoroughly rude Carla, who somehow connected to the people who burned him and thus ended his career as a super spy. But it turns out that there is another party who is after both Carla and Michael, forcing them into a somewhat uneasy alliance.

Meanwhile, proving that the CIA's lost has been the good people of Miami's gain, Michael. Sam, and Michael's off again on again girl friend and ex IRA terrorist Fiona, played by Gabrielle Anwar, find themselves helping a distraught father recover some money from a scam artist so that he can get much needed medical treatment for his desperately ill son. Here Fiona shows a previously undisclosed maternal side, showing the kid how to set up a proper ambush with his toy soldiers. Later, when the scam artist actually boasts about how easy it is to rip off parents of sick kids, Fiona decides that it's time for a good beat down. The bikini clad girl fight that ensues is a delight, partly because the two bikini clad girls actually know how to fight (i.e. none of the hair pulling that usually accompanies such scenes.)

The great thing about Burn Notice is that Michael is not one of these angst ridden spies that we too often seen who have decided that there is no different between "us" and "them." Despite the bureaucratic machinations that have landed him in Miami, he actually believes in what he was doing as a super spy and really is anxious to get back doing it. Nor, while he does get angry from time to time, does he get into the kind of volcanic rages that Jack Bauer seems to experienced every few minutes. No need for Michael to knee cap bad guys to make them talk. He can get people to talk just by making them think he'll knee cap them.

Also every episode of Burn Notice contains some great insights into the art of spy craft. Burn Notice is the only series where one might find out the proper way to evade someone in a high speed car chase or how to use a cell phone as a bugging device.

Season three of Burn Notice looks to be pretty good too. Burn Notice's creator hints that ghosts for the various pasts of our principles will be rising up to haunt them. Considering the kind of pasts Michael, Sam, and Fiona have, that should be real exciting.
