Burning Fat for Men Over 50

As we age, our bodies change, so the ways in which we exercise and burn fat must change as well. While we might hate to admit it, after age 50 we start to slow down a bit, even if 50 is the new 40. This doesn't mean it's time to give up though. It's just time to adjust how you work out and how you burn fat. Here are some tips on how to keep up your fat burning activities.

Walking - In the morning, after lunch or dinner, or whenever you have the chance, walking can be a great way to burn fat. While it won't magically transform you into a muscle bound bodybuilder, every little bit of fat burning exercise helps.

Swimming - Swimming is soothing, relaxing, and a great fat burning exercise. It is a refreshing way to burn fat, you won't get all hot and sweaty, plus since you are floating in water there is a reduced risk for injuries.

Sweeping the walk - Even simple things around the home can get your body moving and burn those calories. Sweeping the porch or the walk can get your blood flowing and can be a great warm up for more strenuous activities or good exercise on its own.

Raking leaves - Raking leaves can be a nice way to tidy your yard as well as burn some fat. Just make sure you don't over exert yourself or hurt your back doing too much in the process.

Gardening - While gardening might seem like more of a casual hobby, it can also be great exercise that helps burn fat. Working outdoors, bending, lifting, digging in the dirt, pulling weeds, watering plants, etc. can all help you burn a bit of excess fat.

Utilize down time - Whether watching television, reading a book, or just sitting down to take a breather, you can still keep your body active. By flexing, tightening and releasing different muscles, and doing other small exercises, you can help your body stave off fat.

Avoid the cart - When playing golf, consider walking the holes instead of renting the golf cart. Not only will you be saving a nice chunk of money on the cart rental but you are also burning some calories walking those 18 holes.

Watch what you eat - Remember that soda and Twinkie diet from your senior year of high school? You didn't gain a pound did you? Well, those days are gone. Your metabolism got lost somewhere between thirty and thirty-five, and you have no idea where it has gone. So if you haven't already, it's probably time to start eating healthier and more conscientiously.

Staying active, even indoors - Being sedentary can take a toll on your body. If you live in a climate that keeps you indoors for a large portion of the year, it is important to stay active, not only to keep your body in shape, but also to maintain its fat burning abilities. Even little things like doing laundry, doing dishes, cleaning, and small repair projects around the home can keep you burning the calories needed to keep the fat off.

Don't stop - While there will certainly be days where you'll be feeling your age, don't let this keep you from being active and doing what you like to do. Giving up won't burn fat and will only keep you from living the life you enjoy.
