While Dublin is a fantastic city with tons of things to do and great pubs to visit, it's really worth taking a day to enjoy the countryside outside of the city as well. There are a couple of companies offering bus tours throughout Dublin and the surrounding areas, and on my recent trip to Dublin, I took advantage of a tour being run by Day Tours Unplugged.
Our trip was in the fall, so the bus was blissfully empty and devoid of too many chattering tourists. Altogether, there were only about 10 of us on board, plus our wonderful tour guide. Our itinerary took us from Dublin's city center to Trim Castle (filming location for Braveheart), then off to the Hill of Tara. After that, we stopped for lunch and the historic Man O War pub, and then briefly walked around the harbor in the fishing village of Howth.
The cost of the tour includes admission to all locations, but does not include meals or beverages. The bus was very comfortable, with big panoramic windows that were really easy to shoot photos through. The bus itself was spotless, smelled great, and was ideal for quick naps between destinations. Our driver was energetic, charming, and filled with a wealth of information and a generosity of spirit. He was willing to answer all our questions, teach us traditional Irish songs, and take pictures for us.
The company also runs a number of night, half-day, and full-day tour schedules, including trips to the Wicklow Mountains and the Boyne Valley.
I would highly recommend booking a day trip through Day Tours Unplugged to anyone who is visiting Dublin for the first time, as well as to anyone returning to Dublin who has yet to enjoy the breathaking vistas of the countryside outside of the city proper. The next time I'm on vacation in Dublin, I'll definitely be checking out on of their other day tours.
