Bush Administration Pushes Peace Deal to Obama

The Transition Begins

Today, amid a flurry of activity in Washington surrounding the transition from a Bush to an Obama administration, White House Spokesperson Dana Perino informed staffers and the Press Corps that the US-backed Israeli - Palestine peace would be handed to the President-elect. The Associated Press confirmed this report.

This comes as the Bush administration is becoming less and less hands-on in their last days. A lame-duck session of Congress will be held to push forward and economic stimulus package, and the response of the Bush administration is unknown.

The Peace treaty may not be a pleasant surprise for the President-elect: as it is designed, the treaty approaches the Mideast crisis with an uninvolved American role. An Obama administration may decide to scrap the current proposal as it stands to re-engage with a more enthusiastic position in the brokering and implementation of a treaty.

The concession comes after nearly a year of promises from the Bush officials dating back to last November that the treaty would be completed, signed, and agreed upon by the end of 2008.

Dana Perino said, "We do not think it is likely it will happen before the end of the year." Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice confirmed this sentiment in an earlier briefing.

This announcement comes at a time when the future Obama administration is struggling to coalesce. The Mideast deal is one of many issues that may play second-fiddle to the ever-growing concern of economic collapse, severe unemployment, and a shrinking GDP.
