Business Jets Airlift US Expatriates Out of Egypt

Over 1200 Americans Living in Egypt Have Fled the Country on Small Planes

Mike Oberg
AvWeb, an online magazine for the aviation world reported today that private aircraft are filling the need for US expatriates who want to leave Egypt. Regular airline flights have been mostly unavailable, but charter flights and private airplanes have moved more than 1200 people out of Egypt. This is not purely out of a desire to help-- a flight to Cyprus is going for $26,000 and a trip to Abu Dhabi costs $100,000!

The leader in the evacuation effort is Air Partner, which took 800 people out on 14 flights over 36 hours to "safe havens" as far away as the U.S. "Air Partner team members worldwide worked tirelessly throughout the weekend arranging flights out of Egypt for individuals and corporations wishing to safeguard oversees employees from the political unrest currently gripping the country," an Air Partner statement said.

Once again, the value of private, non-commercial airplanes have shown the ability to fill the need for transportation in parts of the world that have been struck with chaos due to natural disasters or political turmoil. Although this effort isn't as noble as the help that was given by General Aviation aircraft to the Haiti disaster, it shows yet another benefit of small planes and the ability of small companies and individuals to respond quickly to an unforeseen need.

When safety of lives are involved, with the country threatening to implode, better that people flee to safety. Time seems to be running short. What a world, with the multiplier contagion effect looming! Good to see the private aircrafts coming to rescue, but at a price! Nice reporting, Mike - siva

I am impressed at the way this has gone. Hopefully things will remain somewhat peaceful as they were today. I think he can see the writing on the wall.

A high price to pay for safety, but worth it.

$26,000? That's absurd. I would stick around and enjoy the protest at that price.
