Business Lifeline - Fundraising

Melanie D. Dameron
Many organizations begin fundraising campaigns to raise public awareness and financial support for their causes to help others and their continued business operation. During these difficult and unstable economic times the nation is facing, fundraising efforts are not only inspiring in nature, but also demonstrate characteristics of truly admirable business practices. College trains an individual for future business operations whether you are an owner or employee of any company. However, by actively learning about and participating in fundraising, valuable skills are learned that are necessary to the lifeline of any business, whether it is a non-profit organization, a corporation or a DBA.

How so? There is a productive relationship between non-profit and for-profit organizations and the community. The organizations need each other to thrive in enterprise and everyday people want to conduct business with an organization or company that gives back to its community. For this relationship to exist harmoniously, good personal and business characteristics must exist.

To be successful, you must have outstanding communications skills. You must be able to converse with people to make them feel comfortable, but be able to get down to business. You must also possess great organizational skills. Organization is required to maintain a client or donor database. Keeping these contacts arranged for current and future use is vital for any organization because they are your market base. Also, you must be a capable manager. It's impossible to work alone and be profitable. A person with proficient managerial talents should be skilled at recruiting, training and motivating others to meet the needs of their organization.

Overall, fundraising for your organization teaches you priceless Public Relations skills. Think about the importance here. Public relations gain an organization or individual exposure to their audiences because public relations places exposure in credible third-party outlets, it offers third-party legitimacy that advertising does not have. PR can be used to build rapport with employees, customers, investors, voters or the general public. Almost any organization that has a stake in how it is portrayed in the public arena employs some level of public relations." Public Relations skills along with the many other skills developed through active fundraising helps all organizations or companies achieve their full potential.

Learning all you can about fundraising with experienced and successful educators is an amazing opportunity that should be utilized to its full potential. Studies show that in strong economic times, corporate giving increases. Then, when the economy is turbulent, some business sectors decrease their financial support. This can prove challenging, especially when you must compete with other causes for the same corporate dollar. Companies usually don't give support for purely philanthropic reasons. Most are generally looking at the bottom line because they are responsible to stockholders or other obligations. Thus, corporate donors are seeking some type of return on their investment.

However, the motivation to stay involved with charities regardless of the economy although not selfless is a necessary relationship to maintain for the life of their organization. So, the skills and experience you gain now with the help of great educators to be a successful fundraiser for your organizations are immeasurable and invaluable in your business and entrepreneurial career.

Expect great things from yourself as you build on your fundraising skills (communication, organization, managing, public relations to list a few) and experience which will boost your business level and lifespan.
