Today almost all business processes run on databases. Think of how many times you use your debit or credit card, or how many times you fill out online forms. All this information has to go somewhere, and no human being on earth'expect probably you'could remember this information. Thus the information is sent to a computer and stored in a database. This locks away all that precious information inside the computer system of the organization you gave your information to. The programs companies usually use as database software includes Microsoft's SQL Server or the free MySQL database software.
Whenever data is retrieved from a database a simple line of SQL code is written and all the information stored within the database is easily retrieved. SQL is also capable of performing complex algorithms on the data in order to find specific patterns and trends. This is known as data mining. Data mining is how corporations use the information given to them by you, the customer, to predict who you will spend your money.
The more information a corporation has, the more power it has to make money. This is because the marketing strategies inside that corporation can be altered using the information gained using data mining. It is theorized that many large firms have enough information to tell nearly all of the demographic information of every area on the planet of commercial interest.
Although the ACLU is vehemently apposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ and fights for evil 99% of the time, they do get it right once in a while. One such instance of the ACLU getting it right is their fight against the big corporations use of their databases. If the big corporations had it their way, they'd consolidate their data into huge databases to know absolutely everything about you they possibly could.
The companies would argue "Hey, we are just using it to better serve the customers. But imagine paying more for a product or service simply because of your health record. Perhaps your insurance company should know all about your spending habits and begin to design their actuarial tables to incorporate spending patterns.
As you can see, knowledge is power, and too much power in the hands of anyone except the Lord Jesus is dangerous. As Americans we must defend our right to privacy and stop big corporations or big government from involving itself in our lives too much.
If you are interested in studying about databases you can learn all about SQL online. MySQL is a free database program that can be used by anyone. If you want a proprietary version, check out Microsoft's SQL Server. This is just like a glorified version of Microsoft Access capable of handling very large amounts of data.
Microsoft SQL Server is, in my opinion, not the way to go if you don't have a ton of cash to spend. Microsoft SQL Server doesn't work well with other free server side scripting languages like PHP and is set up to perform optimally with Microsoft's ASP (Active Server Pages). I use PHP and MySQL exclusively'spending a ton on Microsoft SQL Server just doesn't make sense.
