Buster's Determination

Jeffrey watts
About 4 years ago my oldest daughter, Tabi, purchased a pure white boxer puppy. She named him Buster. It has been quite a ride with this dog. Don't get me wrong he is beautiful, but very stubborn and determined. When he sets his mind on something then he does whatever it takes to achieve the goal. This story shows the determination the dog poses and the ill effects of that determination.

We live just outside of town, and on the property we have goats, sheep, chickens, and turkeys. There is 4 foot fencing separating the animals. Well, one day Buster jumped the fence and killed a turkey. So, we had to put up a kennel with a 6 foot high fence. We attached to the house and put in a doggie door so the dogs could go outside as needed. A few weeks went by and it contained the dogs. There were no problems. Sure he would see a cat or dog go by and jump up on the fence, but never jumped over. We were so happy we were able to take care of the problem. WRONG!

We were all sitting in the family room watching movies one night and what appeared to be a cat was walking through the front yard. Tabi seen it and thought it was our cat Mr. Potato head. Buster also spotted it walking through the yard. Buster then darted out the doggie door and in the blink of an eye he was over the fence. Tabi jumped up and ran out the front door and we were right behind her. We turned the corner of the house on time to hear "IT'S A SKUNK"! They were headed to the drive-way at the same time my youngest daughter, Cristy, and her husband, David, were pulling in the drive way. Before the car stopped completely she opened the door and thought buster was attacking our cat. Her David parked next to our van, which, the skunk had run under the van.

As Cristy was running around the car Tabi was yelling "IT'S A SKUNK"!

At that time David was getting out of the car and the skunk ran out from under the van and Buster stopped it by David's door. By this time Cristy was standing on top of their car. This is the moment Buster had caught the skunk. Buster picked the skunk up in his mouth, and started to shake it from side to side. David seen it was a skunk and was shutting his door to get away. The skunk sprayed Buster and Then, Buster turned the skunk loose and was trying to jump in the car. David tried to push Buster back, but Buster got right up in his lap. The skunk ran into our back yard, and Buster just jumped in the back seat and kept shaking his head. Meatless to say, Buster, David, and the car really smelled bad. We got Buster in the house, which made my house smell also. By the next day the house, the dog, and David smelled much better, but the car no matter what was tried it still smelled like skunk. We Buster proofed the kennel, and this time it really worked. So after this experience we have learned to never under estimate the determination of a dog. Where there's a will, I guess, there really is a way.
