There were many players were deserving of top fantasy bust of the year. No other team met that match than the Detroit 'Football' Lions. However, I must stray away from the lions as no player on the team, except Calvin Johnson, should have been a starter on most teams. So, without further ado, let us start off with the one of the loudest and most arrogant players in the NFL league.
1. Chad 'THEY WON'T LET ME CHANGE MY NAME' Johnson-
This player was a distraction right from the get go. I will admit, I love Chad's competitive nature, his exaggerated ego, but this season was a little too much to handle. First, we start off with the trade rumors. He was demanding a trade, and in retrospect for the Bengals, they should have made that trade. This guys stock has dramatically dropped. He has only 41 receptions, 383 yards, 4 TDs. Now, we can blame a lot of that production on QB injury and the lack of run game for the Bengals. However, you are a big time receiver and need to help your team out in despair. He has only hinder his team and your fantasy team with a lack of consistency. With over 69 receptions and 1,100 yards minimum in his last 6 seasons, he has proven to be the fantasy bust of the year. If you haven't dumped him from your fantasy team yet, please stop reading and do so now.
2. Peyton Manning-
While Peyton's statistics are actually not so bad as far as NFL rating of a QB goes, fantasy wise he has clearly destroyed many team's fantasy productions. He is such a bust because for a round 1 quarterback, he should be nearing 30 TD's and 3,200 yards at least. Instead, he only has 19 touchdowns and 2,800 yards. While the yards production isn't so bad, his QB rating has fallen to 87.2, far from the 100+ ratings he recieved in his previous 5 seasons. Squeaking out 7 games with poor leadership performance and play surely speaks for the lack in numbers.
3. Derek Anderson-
This might have as well been a pre-determined bust. With Brady Quinn on the bench, learning the system, it was inevitable that at the sign of weakness from Anderson, he would be out. However, his majestic play in 2007 was clearly enough to take him all the way to week 9. He surely will be a great backup in 2009, but watch for him to find his way back to the starting lineup with his creative play, just not with the Browns. On a side note, can Romeo Crennel get fired yet? He doesn't know how to run an NFL team. Some people are just not meant to be head coaches.
4. Vernon Davis-
Are you kidding me? What happened to the phenom that I saw in the combine? The freak athlete who was a new breed of specimen that the NFL had yet to see. Stop crying, there is no i in team, just play ball. Yeah, last year was a bit of a breakout year for you, but you have been a team burden. Only 19 receptions and 263 yards is way below the 52 receptions and 509 yards you put up last year. So the 49er's aren't that good and your quarterback, at least right now, doesn't seem to be your future; stop crying and play for the fans. All I have to say is thank god for Mike Singletary for calling you out because someone needed to!
5. LaDainain Tomlinson aka LDT-
So you are the number one overall pick in most fantasy drafts, and your a bust. That's right. Hampered by injury, no. Disappointing team, not really. LDT, where have you been? Only 770 rush yards and 5 TD's!! Not to mention that you have only reached the 100 yard mark twice this season. No less than 1263 yards and 10 touchdowns since you have been in the league, and those numbers are from your rookie year. You are a perennial back, fantasy players rely on your consistency. You have been more than lack luster and will need to step your efforts in order to get out of the top 5 worst fantasy picks of 2008.
Well there you have it, my top 5 fantasy busts of 2008. Let's see how some of these player do in the final games of the season. Will they make the grade to be picked highly again, or will their stock fall below their value? Only time will tell the tail in this one folks!
