I remember your eyes
welled up with tears
welled up with tears
and fear
and panic
The way your lips trembled
as you struggled to be brave
All I wanted to do was scoop you up into my arms
and take you away
take you back
to an earlier time
when we laughed together
and smiled
and shared our souls
But I could do nothing
But place a cool cloth on your forehead
And hold your hand
And keep watch over you
As you slipped away.
