Butter and Its Uses

Della R. Buckland
You use it on toast or muffins, even on mash potatoes and in baking, but did you know that butter can do much more than just flavor your favorite foods? Thanks to Reader's Digest and The Frugal Duchess, butter has found new life away from the toast and potatoes. So what can butter do to help improve your life? The following is a brief list of what it can do:

1. Foot Massage. If you have tired and sore feet, use a little bit of butter and massage into your feet. The butter helps soften your skin and relaxes your feet.

2. Shave. Out of shaving cream? Just wet your skin and use a bit of butter. Gives a close shave. Ladies, using butter to shave will not only give you a close smooth shave; it will also help your skin because of the oils in butter.

3. Non-Stick the Sticky. Rub a thin layer of butter on your knife (being careful not to cut yourself) and your knife will not stick to sticky items such as candy ginger or fudge.

4. Soft Hands. Out of lotion? A small bit of butter rubbed into your hands will act as a skin softener and smell just as good.

5. Happy cats. Adopting a new cat or kitten can be hard when the feline will not come to you. Dab a bit of butter on the top of their paws. Cats love butter and will be happy to lick it off and always come back for more.

6. Fish hands. Cleaning fish can leave its smell on your hands and stay long after you have enjoyed your meal. Rub your hands with butter and then wash with soap and water to remove the butter and the smell washes off.

7. Pills. Roll your pill in a little bit of butter and the pill will slide down as you swallow.

8. Fresh Onions. If you only need a bit of onion, but do not want to lose all of the onion, rub a bit of butter on the cut side and wrap in foil. It will keep much longer and stay fresh until you need onion again.

9. Sap remover. If you parked under a shade tree and sap dripped onto your vehicle, there is no need to take it to a professional. Use a micro fiber or soft cloth with a bit of butter and rub the sap. It will come off and there will be no scratches.

10. Cheese. To keep cheese of molding and keep it fresher longer, rub a bit of butter along the cut side of the cheese and store as normal. Just remember to keep applying the butter after every use and your cheese will last longer.

With these ten tips, butter is no longer just relegated to toast and potatoes; it now can truly help you around the house.
