Butter Will Keep Mold Off of Cheese

Donna Daniels
Cheese is known to be able to last a long time. Cheese is sold in large quantities and if you don't eat it in a certain amount of time the cheese can get hard and mold can grow on the cheese. Or maybe you like cheese a lot but you don't seem to be able to eat it before it gets hard and moldy.

If your cheese gets hard on the edges or gets moldy you can always cut off the hard moldy parts of the cheese and then eat the good cheese inside. But there are other things you can do to keep your cheese fresher longer.

Sometimes you can wrap the cheese tightly in plastic wrap and place the cheese into the freezer. But cheese that has been frozen is not necessarily as good as when it was nice and fresh.

The cheese you buy can be preserved by wrapping the cheese tightly in plastic to avoid letting any air get to the cheese. If air is not able to touch the cheese the cheese will stay fresher longer. Wrapping the cheese tightly in plastic is great but you can do more to keep you cheese fresher longer.

To keep cheese fresher longer you can take some butter and rub a light coating of butter on the cheese. Rubbing a thin coat of butter on the cheese works best for the harder types of cheese.

After you coat the cheese with a thin layer of butter you can wrap the cheese in an airtight plastic wrap. Between the butter coating and the plastic wrap your cheese will stay fresh and edible for a long time.

When you cut off some of the cheese you can recoat the part you cut off and rewrap the cheese in some plastic wrap. Then put the cheese back into the refrigerator for later use.

Spreading a thin layer of butter on cheese is a great way to preserve the cheese and keep it around for a long time. The butter can add some better flavor to the cheese since it is just a thin layer. Butter is a good flavor all by itself but when added to cheese it makes it better.

You can use this butter method of keeping cheese fresh on many different types of cheese but it works best on hard cheese like Colby cheese, cheddar cheese, and parmesan cheese that has not been grated.
