Butterfly Cinquain: Summer in Lahore

National Poetry Month Challenge

Heather Carreiro
Summer in Lahore, which lasts from mid-April to mid-October, is not my favorite season. When there wasn't so much loadshedding (power cuts), it was bearable, but now waking up several times during the night because the power has gone off is just not fun. It reaches 120 F and it can get really hot and stuffy inside. It's difficult to get sleep at night or to be productive during the daylight hours. The one consolation of summer is mangoes and fresh mango ice cream. Living in the Punjab, I've learned to appreciate rain like I never did in the US.

Summer
Life consists of
Eating mango ice cream
Electricity always out
Sweating
Noisy generators buzzing
Zombie-like existence
Deprived of sleep
Send rain!

(It's ironic that I missed the deadline to submit this call due to loadshedding!)

Summer in Lahore sounds very hard to handle, Heather. It can get up to about 110F here in summer (May-October), and that's bad enough!

Loadshedding is government controlled power cuts. Sometimes it's one hour a day. Sometimes it's twelve hours day.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yes, for now I'll enjoy the mango ice cream, the rain, and any cool breeze that comes my way. I also look forward to spending summer in New Hampshire, cool nights and Lake Winnipesaukee!

I can only imagine. You must only go out at night to make things bearable.

Heather, your poem expresses your sentiments precisely. Well done! (^;^) Sorry to hear about the power outages. I'm sure it's frustrating! I can certainly empathize with feeling miserable from heat and lack of sleep. (No fun!!!) On the upside, it sounds like you are moving soon. Hopefully, a change in climate will be preferable, even if there are no mangoes. In the meantime, enjoy the mango ice cream and I'll pray for rain!
