Buy American Cars

Why Not Buy from Our Own Countrymen?

Amy Knowse
I would suggest that Americans buy an American car. Not because of the products. There are some imports I like better. Not because I want to support union labor. I don't.

Many Americans buy Japanese cars (I am using Japan as an example). The Japanese don't buy our products. US products are often not as good as theirs and US workers have health care and other bloated labor costs built in to the price that makes our products less competitive on the world market.

What about all the other products we buy? They are nearly all made in China, Asia, Thailand, or some country in Micronesia. This is killing us-when will Americans get the message?

I had a friend who recently visited both Japan and China. My friend loved how she was treated and happily mentioned how the economy of both China and Japan is flourishing! Of course it is! They are getting tons of money from the USA because we are outsourcing work to them since their work costs us less than our own people. Meanwhile our American citizens are losing their jobs, their homes, and their cars. What is the matter with Americans?

When our government lifted the embargo and allowed free trade exchanges with the above mentioned countries, they practically slit the throat of Americans.

Japanese, Chinese and other investors from the countries we outsource to instead buy parts of our country on a continuing basis, our infrastructure. When they buy a golf course, I really don't care. When they buy some of our financial institutions, communications companies, and transportation infrastructure, I do care.

Incredible as it sounds, these prospering countries control many parts of our infrastructure and hopefully in a responsible way, but given enough of it, terrorists or governments of countries that hate us may offer to buy some of it from the non-American owners. When our enemies own part of our infrastructure, they pave the way for terrorists to hurt us.

Selling Toyotas and Hondas produces jobs in this country; sales jobs for the Americans who sell the Japanese cars. These jobs result in hard working, tax paying Americans. If fewer Americans bought Japanese cars, they would instead buy American cars resulting in the same amount of sales jobs. I'm all for competition, but I would like to see America encourage American companies. Encourage them with better ideas instead of burdening them with excessive regulation and taxation to the point of struggling to compete with overseas companies.

Americans are smart and can do the right thing. Some only choose what seems best at the moment without considering long-term consequences. Buying what seems to be a better product at lower prices may have long-term consequences.

If you have some pride in your country, interests in your children's future, or feel the same responsibility when you vote, factor it into your buying decisions.

I am not saying don't buy foreign made products. I am saying, don't automatically buy them every time without thinking about it. Competition is good. Be smart and make a wise buying decision for your needs, for your future, and your children and grandchildren's future.

When free trade was legalized (no embargo on incoming products from China and the like), it was like a death wish for our USA economy
