The local Knights of Columbus are working with Phantom Fireworks this year. Firework sales are an annual fundraiser for The Knights of Columbus Battlefield Council 10246 that supports many local charities including food banks, shelters, church and youth organizations in Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg and Orange County.

People are going to the white tent in the Costco parking lot to buy their 4th of July fireworks but organizers hope the turnout is good with the economy this year. The firework project chair, Paul Schultz, has been working of the details of the fireworks tent sale since January.

He has around 75 volunteers and 30 women from the Ladies Auxiliary to help with the annual firework event. The Knights of Columbus have had a firework stand somewhere of route 3 for over 18 years now. Last year they were at the Little Tire parking lot near Wawa selling TNT brand fireworks.

This year the Battlefield Knights of Columbus have their tent near Costco in the Spotsylvania Mall parking lot and they are selling Phantom Brand Fireworks . With great products like the Fiery Frog, the Top Turvy Spinning Fountain, the Brew Haha Fountain and snappers, spinners, smoke bombs and sparklers the Knights of Columbus tent has a great selection at a competitive price.

Paul Schultz has managed the fireworks fundraising project for 5 years now. This year he hopes to raise $8,000 dollars which is quite a bit less that previous years when the tent has brought in $12,000, $15,000 or even significantly more but Mr. Schultz feels that $8,000 is a reasonable goad for 2009.

The decision to change firework vendors was pure business necessity. "We have always been able to get a space donated but this year we couldn't" Schultz explained. Battlefield Council 10246 approached businesses all along route 3 and no one was willing to donate parking lot space this year. That is where Phantom Fireworks came in. Phantom fireworks was willing to pay the tent rent in exchange for the Knights of Columbus exclusively selling their products.

Another similar concern for the fireworks fundraiser is that just as local businesses would not donate parking lot space they were unwilling to allow the Knights of Columbus to put up signs attracting customers from Rt. 3. They expect to be busiest on July 3rd when local Federal workers are off but are a little worried that without signs loyal customer may not find them.

Look for the blue containers next to the white tent at Spotsylvania Towne Center this from 10am-10pm. They are hoping to sell out some time on the 4th of July if all goes well but until then they have individual fireworks as well as packages. The managers special is $89.99 for the New Yorker tray and you get a bonus Flaming Heart Fountain so come out and support your local community buying fireworks from the Knights of Columbus!
