Technological innovations led to the development of super-farms, where tons of produce could be grown economically. It benefitted everyone. Farmers focused on a single crop. The transportation industry grew as the need to quickly transport fresh food to markets across the U.S. increased. It created jobs, eventually led to food processing to preserve foods longer, and changed the face of the consumer food industry.
As we learn of the harm that chemicals and preservatives have caused in our bodies, there has been a resurgence of interest in organic foods and locally grown agriculture. There are benefits to buying locally grown food at farmer's markets and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Groups.
Buying locally ensure fresher food. Ideally, you could walk out your back door and pluck fruit from your garden to cook for dinner. Unfortunately, we live in a world where that isn't feasible for everyone. What you can do is visit the farmers market in your search for organic and fresh food.
When you shop locally you impact the environment in positive ways. Less transportation of food means less oil and expendable resources it takes to get the food from the farmer to your table. If you try to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle, then buying locally from the farmer's market will work right into your lifestyle.
Decreased transportation also means decreased pollution, another benefit of buying organic foods locally.
The greatest benefit is to your community. Small farmers are able to sustain their farms and the viability of agriculture as a means of income. They in turn will spend money in the local community. Buying organic and fresh fruits and vegetables helps your local economy.
Your purchase of organic foods from CSA's and farmer's markets also helps preserve land in your community. It can prevent erosion and help preserve the rural landscape that you love.
