RBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) is a genetically altered growth hormone that simulates the natural growth hormone produced by cows. These hormones are injected into milking cows to increase the production of milk by as much as 10%. By the nature of injecting the cows for greater milk production, cows are faced with illness issues such as mastitis, lameness, and reproductive complications. To think that our schools are serving this milk to young children 10 months out of the year is just a shame.
Cows that produce milk that is considered organic may not be given feed that is treated with any kind of pesticides. This is a great thing as we all know that the use of pesticides in our gardens has been linked to reproductive problems in humans. It would only make sense that we not consume a byproduct of an animal that has ingested such pesticide treated feed.
Now that I have given you a basic understanding behind organic milk and its benefits, let's consider pricing points. Organic milk is generally double the price of non-organic milk this can be very expensive when raising a family. Some ideas include reducing the amount of milk consumed and trading it in for other forms of organic dairy such as cheeses and yogurt. The organic cheeses and yogurts tend to be a bit more affordable. I have membership at some of the major wholesale clubs such as BJ's wholesale, Costco and Sam's Club. These places keep the prices far lower than your regular grocery stores. Lastly if price is a major reason for not selecting organic milk, then at a minimum ensure that the milk you purchase has a label that states that RBGH hormones are not used.
Studies also suggest that organic milk has higher levels of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is an essential fatty acid that may help lower the risk of breast cancer. CLA is considered to be in higher concentration levels in milk that comes from cows that are mostly grazed in the pasture.
I am a believer that many of the products we consume in our modern day society are comprised of so many artificial ingredients that it is no wonder that our society has many aches and pains which only help feed modern day pharmaceutical research. Living naturally helps our bodies die naturally. Organic food is a premium but it is still far less expensive than eating out. So, Go Green....help our animals to be treated humanely and help our farmers produce natural products. Buy Organic!!!
