Buying Back to School Supplies: Think Green

Vonnie Kennedy
It's August and the days are getting shorter, the kids are getting bored and mommies are beyond crazy. Fortunately, it's almost time to go back to school and the kids need school supplies but this year mommy has decided to go green. She has already begun greening up the home by using compact fluorescent light bulbs and setting the air conditioner at constant seventy-eight degrees. How can she help save the environment and save money at the same time when she goes shopping for school supplies?

According to PRNewswire, in a 2009 survey of the cost of items on school-supply reported the average cost to send a child into the classroom armed with school-recommended supplies this fall is approximately $474 for elementary school, $545 for middle school and $1,000 for high school students.

Unfortunately, going green often costs more than the standard non-eco products. However, the payoff is knowing that our children's future will include a cleaner planet. Luckily, there are ways you can save money buying back to school supplies and save the environment at the same time.

The Ultimate Green Store has a variety of eco-friendly lunch boxes, water bottles and backpacks and the prices aren't bad considering the durability. Your child will love the vast assortment of colors, too.

You can shop at Staples online or in the store and find plenty of eco-easy school supplies at a reasonable price ranging from pens to notebooks to Crayola Crayons. If you decide to shop online, the shipping is free for orders over $50.

Office Max has a small number of Environmentally Preferable school supplies online but they may have more in their stores. It's definitely worth checking out. Red Apple School Supply is another online store where you can find a broad range of Earth-friendly products. The prices are equivalent other office supply stores and they have a nice variety as well. The Green Office website is well worth checking for a vast number of school supplies with discount prices and free shipping for orders over $49.00.Whether you shop online or in the stores, finding eco-friendly back to school supplies is becoming much easier than it was even five years ago. It's even more enjoyable to shop when you are thinking of your child's future.

Glad you included so many options of what to get and where to get them, Vonnie! Ugh, so glad I don't have any children in school now. I used to think it was high back when our daughter was in school. Also, Lorraine, thanks for the tip!

Just watch out and don't break your compact fluorescent light bulbs. They have mercury in them and you'll need to call the HazMat team to clean it up. Broken bulbs pose a health threat if you don't. So much for "green."
