Buying the Best Car for Your Teenager

Melanie Dickie
Many people choose a car on appearance or performance, others choose the car on more practical terms such as gas mileage and safety features. You may consider some things before purchasing the car of your dreams:

  • How many miles does it have?
  • Has it been properly maintained?
  • Has it been involved in a wreck or a flood?
  • What are some key features you are looking for?
  • Is the car really worth what they are asking for it?
  • Are you looking for a new or used vehicle?
  • Does the car come with a warranty? If so what kind?
  • Can you afford insurance on the vehicle?
  • Does the car have a recall?

If you are looking for a used vehicle, I'd suggest getting a car fax or letting a trusted mechanic take a look at it before making the purchase. When searching for a car, be smart and don't rush into anything. Make sure it's a car you like and can afford, before purchasing. Check the Blue Book on the car, and make sure the price they are asking is in a reasonable range, in the future if you buy a car for more than it's worth it may be harder to trade in or sale.

Teenagers and Vehicles
If you are the parent of a teenager, they are some considerations you need to make to
Find the perfect car for them. Most teens want a car for style or for performance; being a parent you know that that kind of vehicle is not suitable for such inexperienced drivers. While buying a car for a teen, you may consider size of the vehicle, small cars
are dangerous, because they may lack safety when met with a larger vehicle. Larger vehicles may also cause a threat, and can be dangerous in case they rollover. How are you supposed to find a safe car that they like? Compare safety features, while small cars can be particularly dangerous, car manufactures have stepped up safety features with the addition of side curtain airbags and Onstar. The Nissan Versa being the small car that it is got good ratings all around. The key to buying a safe, reliable car is to simply compare, and take your time. There's a perfect car out there for everyone.

Performance
One vital factor in purchasing your teenager a vehicle is the performance and overall speed of the vehicle. It's a good idea to also consider your teen's maturity level, and how they control a vehicle. It's also a good idea to teach your teenager about car safety and what is and isn't acceptable behind the wheel of a car.

Parenting a Teenager Driver
It's crucial that you as a parent set certain rules for your kids, and follow through with punishment if these rules are broken. Here are some rules you may wish to set for your teen driver:

  • Don't have more than one person in the car with you at one time
  • No loud music
  • Don't mess with the radio

If the rules are broken, you may wish to deny them the privilege to drive
