Buying a Black Lab

The Depth of His Eyes

Tina Herzog
Do you remember your first pet? Was it a dog, cat, hamster, frog, or hermit crab? How did the new animal bring your family together? I recall the feeding, scolding, bathing, and cleaning up the messes bringing my family closer...we took turns. When the idea of a responsibility of a new pet came up, I was skeptical--to say the least. Life is hectic, the economy isn't quite booming, and the freedom of no pet seemed to out-way any positive changes that could arise. Boy, was I wrong.

His name was Bud. He was a black lab puppy that stoled the hearts of all who encountered him. His mere $350.00 price tag seemed like peanuts, when you'd look into his huge brown eyes. Bud's saggy eyes made mince meat out of doubters and led the pocket book's contents out for a walk. It only took a few short months to see how smart and calming the newest Herzog was. I am serious when I tell you he even could spell. r-o-l-l-o-v-e-r was his favorite word. He loved to bring slippers to his master and play dead for the children. Yep, Bud was the best friend we had all needed.

The vet bills can be pricey. The shots, checkups, medications, and injury-visits added up quickly. I suggest investing a few bucks each week into a doggy account to help offset their strain. Bud is one of the family, therefore, no bill is to high for his health and well being. Too bad all the money in the world can't stop the inevitable. Dogs spend their entire lives taking care of us mentally, while exhausting themselves physically, for nothing more than a treat or kind word.

Bud was twelve this year. He lived a water dog's dream. Bud hunted harder then any of the human crew and seen more animals too. He had served a purpose more heartwarming than many can imagine; he guided our family to a closeness never-before-seen. On May 18th Bud said goodbye to this world. The remnants left behind shall stay alive and unmatched in all of our hearts, forever. So, for Bud I am writing; I hope he reads this.

The depth of his eyes
Their life's purpose is to fulfill ours. They have personalities that reflect their owner's. The sixth sense, so strong, guides them to our sides in times of sorrow, joy, and compassion. It also keeps them from us in times of anger, frustration, and punishment. Our true friends till the ends of their earthly journeys.

They love us unconditionally, always. Our flaws disappear. Our empty voids are filled. Our nerves are calmed. Our hectic day to day activities are more manageable. They listen to our deepest secrets and never tell a soul. They are our loyal companions.

They put their lives on the line for ours; without a second thought. They work themselves endlessly to please us. They are our jesters, keeping us entertained and on our toes.

Their eyes tell the stories they can not speak. As deep as the black hole, yet as vast as a storybook. They have feelings that are found within their stares. Have you ever peered into those eyes? It can bring you overwhelming happiness or a hurtful tear to your soul.

All they need is us...all we need is them
Rest in peace old friend, you were our angel and our saving grace.
