Forget the old-school thoughts about car buying. Today's dealers actually want you to bring the kids with you when you shop for a car.
Dealer Bruce Schindler, Bob Davidson Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, Baltimore, said that most dealers have kid friendly areas with large television sets and toys to entertain the youngsters at points in the transaction they might find dull. But don't think the kids aren't welcome to join in the shopping process.
"Kids are a definite part of the transaction," says Schindler. "There's no question that kids influence the buying decision."
Now that more cars are outfitted with rear audio/video equipment, multi-panel sky roofs, reclining back seats and other passenger friendly extras, kids' input often helps parents make the decision on a car. In fact, many times Schindler sees kids tell parents about car features that adults had failed to notice.
That's more important than ever now that the economy has dipped and buyers want more for their dollars. Although automakers and dealers have responded with lower prices, there is a downside. When income levels for car salespeople started to dip, some of the savvier sales force quit. Those spots have been filled in some dealerships with less experienced salespeople that aren't adept at outlining cars' features. Here are some other points car dealers not you should consider when shopping for cars with or without kids:
1. Have all family members sit in the cars' seats and try available features. Of course you'll want to be respectful of the cars but don't be shy about test drives, testing features and asking questions.
2. Don't hold back when telling the car salesperson what features you want. Sales staff don't want to up sell you into a car that you won't like but do want to help you get what you want. Savvier sales staff can often recommend lower cost models with desirable features that a buyer hadn't considered.
3. Remember that car dealers are interested in long-term relationships with buyers. Ask what service specials and other values the dealership may offer to car buyers. If you get free oil changes or other service options, that may offset a slightly higher price. The lowest price for a car does not always equal the best deal.
