Packaged computers are quite cheap and very appealing to the consumer. The reason is that if you're just a simple computer user, why bother with the intricate parts of the computer when you can just buy a complete computer package? A lot of them are cheap and the salespeople usually give you recommendations depending on what you're going to use the computer for.
When it comes to performance, this is where the custom-built computer usually wins. Computer packages come in different hardware combination and prices. From what I have observed from most of the computer stores I've been to, they do have packages that focus on the needs of the user. Some have economic packages where you can do basic internet activities, desktop publishing, word publishing and the likes. Some have mid-range packages wherein you can play games at moderate speed and quality. And some have high-end computers aimed at PC gamers.
But why do custom-built computers have the edge when it comes to performance, it is due to the fact that you can focus on specific hardware to upgrades such as the video card and the processor. If you already have a computer and you just want to increase its performance, most of the time, you really do not need to buy a whole computer package. Simple upgrades can make your computer run significantly faster. You have the option to buy better parts that are not included in the packages. But it really depends on your knowledge on computer parts, how they function and current technology and trends in the market.
One really good thing about assembling your own computer is that you can learn a lot more about computer hardware. You gain experience by familiarizing yourself with computer hardware and in time, you slowly learn assembling and fixing computers naturally. All you need to do is to complement your knowledge by studying and keeping yourself updated. Regardless of whether you want to buy a complete computer package or assemble your own, always consider your needs and of course, your budget.
