Buying Contact Lenses Online, by Phone, Or By Mail

Not having to make an appointment or a drive to your eye doctor' office every time you need replacement contact lenses is very convenient. There are a few things you should keep in mind though if you buy your lenses this way to make sure you get the right lenses for your eyes.

Make sure you have a current prescription that has not expired. This date is determined by state law. Some states expire their prescriptions in one or two years and some states let the physician determine the expiration date. Check with your physician for your expiration date at your next eye appointment.

Your prescription should have your name, lens measurements, the brand and material, and your doctor's name. Your prescription may also have whether your lenses are daily or extended wear, whether a substitute material may be used for your lenses, the expiration date, and/or the number of refills.

When you purchase contact lenses online, by phone, or by mail, the sites and companies are required to call your doctor for approval before filling your prescription. Of course, there are some that do not. But federal law requires a doctor's approval. Some companies may reqiuire a written prescription. Check the company or site's track record before purchasing your lenses. If the company is trustworthy, they should be able to provide you with information on how to use your lenses and about the risks and benefits involved.

Make sure to see your eye doctor regularly and get an updated prescription for your contact lenses. Wearing lenses that don't fit or not having the right prescription can hurt your eyes and cause damage to your vision. If you do notice changes in your vision or are having problems, you should see your eye doctor immediately. Left untreated, these changes or problems can lead to serious problems, and even blindess. In the early stages, there may be no symptoms but your ophthalmologist knows the early warning signs and can start treatment before the problem turns into a serious matter.

If you do not receive the brand of lenses you ordered, you can contact the seller and request certain information to be sure you get the lenses that are best for your eyes. Find out the brand name, lens name, power (sphere, cylinder, and axis) , diameter, base curve, and peripheral curves. You may be able to return the unused lenses for your prescription lenses.
