Buying Dixie Elixirs, an Alternative to Medical Marijuana, Has Rules

After the Cristal spokesperson pissed off Jay-Z, the hip-hop community hasn't really had an official drink, but I have the feeling that Dixie Elixirs is going to be in somebody's hip-hop song. But don't get too excited about weed soda. There's more to purchasing this drink than you may think.

According to Dixie Elixirs' website, the drink is homegrown in Colorado and "provides an organic alternative for patients seeking a refreshing but equally potent alternative to smoke and tinctures, or carb and calorie loaded edibles."

The drink is supposed to be an alternative to smoking medical marijuana, according to a TIME entry. However, when I contacted the toll-free number on their website, the current terms are that they 1) The company usually only ships to dispensaries, 2) If it were to be purchased on an individual basis, the consumer would have to pay by check or cash only, 3) They don't currently ship outside of Colorado and I was encouraged to move to Denver if I wanted to purchase it (that's not happening), 4) You would have to prove that you have a prescription for medical marijuana, 5) As of today, the customer service representative I talked to said the drink could not be purchased by credit card.

For the folks who are trying to avoid the stigma of smoking weed for recreational purposes as opposed to medical purposes, Dixie Elixirs would raise an eyebrow anyway considering it's got a big image of cannabis on the front of the bottle.

The 12 oz. bottles come in different flavors, too--lemonade, sweet tea, pink lemonade, strawberry, orange, grape and root beer.

I can certainly understand why someone would want to try the carbonated drink as opposed to tearing up her lungs smoking weed, but I think it's only a matter of time before someone tries to dance their way around Dixie Elixirs & Medibles' rules.
