Buying Drustore Makeup

Makeup for a Real Budget

If you're trying to cut back or budget, but need some makeup, chances are you'll be buying drugstore. But just because your makeup isn't from an expensive chain-store, that doesn't mean it's bad quality. There are many drugstore brands that work just as well as high-end brands, but some can be a waste of money.

The first thing to remember about buying drugstore makeup is that there are little or no testers. If there are samples, go ahead and use them because there's nothing more annoying than buying the wrong shade of makeup. If there are no samples, bring along makeup you already own in the shade that you want, if you have it. You can compare the color swatch on the bottom of the products. If you want a different shade, you can approximate by holding up the color swatch, found on the bottom of the product you want, and seeing if it matches or clashes with your skin tone.

Keep an eye out for the brands that you're buying. Usually you pay what you get for. L'Oreal is a more expensive brand, but their cosmetics are generally high quality. Maybelline and Covergirl are great as well, and Almay is a favourite of mine. One or two dollar brands such as e.l.f or Wet 'n' Wild generally have lower quality makeup, but some can be just as good as other brands. E.l.f minerals, about $3 have received some great reviews. You can take a chance with these brands, they're only a few dollars.

Some drugstore makeup can be the same or a slightly less price than what you'd pay at a department store. Prices are going up, and a L'Oreal mascara can be around $13 - more expensive than a mascara from department store brand MAC. It's your choice, you might prefer MAC over L'Oreal, or the other way round. If you're looking for an eyeshadow, cheaper ones are less pigmented than more expensive ones, but you could prefer a more sheer color.

There are some cosmetics you should spend more money on, and some that you don't have to worry about as much. Definitely products that go near your eyes, mascara and eyeliner, you can spend more money on, otherwise you risk infecting your eyes. You should also pick out a high quality foundation, because cheaper ones generally clog pores and are pasty and orange. There is a great range of drugstore mineral foundations out, L'Oreal, Covergirl and Maybelline all have good mineral products.

Highly rated drugstore brands are Revlon, L'Oreal, Physicians Formula, Max Factor, Maybelline and Covergirl. You don't have to spend heaps on makeup for it to be high quality, and if you want to experiment with different colours, try the dollar brands like Wet 'n' Wild.

Happy shopping!

I remember back in the good old days (70s and 80s) when drugstore makeup had testers and mirrors available for most brands. I hate 2009! :(
Anyone remember that scene in the original 'Carrie' where she goes into her local drugstore and puts on a tester lipstick right there to get ready for her prom? Those were the days...
